Chapter 13 - Don't Need to Repair - Always DO Repair

 


Imagine (or draw on your own experience) a situation in which parents are visibly upset with you about an incident at school involving their son or daughter (a bad grade, a demeaning comment allegedly made about the child, a punishment that they consider unjust, etc.).  Write about this situation and how it would play out if your immediate response was "I am sorry that happened." Write out a script of responses and follow-up replies in such as situation.  Remember, you are not saying that the incident was your fault or accepting blame; rather, you are simply starting off by expressing your sorrow that it happened.

I haven't had any experiences that really fit this, the closest would be when scholars tell parents that they have been spending hours on my class work outside of class and have submitted assignments when this does not reflect what I have received from them. In this case I always do my best to explain how much time should be spent on this class, expectations for completion and timeliness, and provide feedback on ways to improve (ie tutoring every Tuesday, having extra reminders at home to remember to submit work on due date, etc). I try to make it so that no one feels like they are being targeted and I simply provide the information I have about what is done in class and standard ways to work with that.

In the first part of this chapter it is about the respect that both the teacher and the student owe each other because if respect is broken in the students it is more complicated because it can create a permanent emotional problem and in the teacher also with the difference that in the Adults don't affect them in the long run and that is why teachers must recognize that sometimes we make mistakes after all we are human.
    In order not to break respect, we must apologize to the students when we make a mistake, this also applies to the administration - teachers and everyone who surrounds the students

  3. I had a situation where the parent was upset about their child not bringing their homework home. I do remember talking her "down of a wall". We eventually came to an agreement that I would remind her scholar to take the homework. It would have gone smoother had I known about "I'm sorry that happened".
