Chapter 20 - "Make It Cool to Care" and Chapter 21 - "Clarify Your Core"

On page 118, the author describes "The Great Teacher" he identifies as "Mrs. Heart."  How did Mrs. Heart motivate Darin to become interested in poetry?  What were Mrs. Heart's attitudes toward state standardized tests, and new initiatives that were inevitably rolled out over the years?  In your own words, what was Mrs. Heart's philosophy of education?  Do you agree with this philosophy?  Take a moment to describe your own philosophy of education after reading this book.

It is very important for every teacher to be patient and have a class where the environment is positive and students feel safe in an environment to learn, and teachers must create a room with elements such as respect and dignity for students and so on and behavior problems will decrease and allow for academic success for students.

    1. I agree that we have a responsibility to help scholars feel safe in their learning environment.

    2. This is probably one of the biggest parts of being a teacher - it is not just about what we teach, but how we teach it and how we make the students feel. Classroom environment has an incredibly large impact on students, not just on their learning in terms of subject matter but also social and emotional development as well.

  2. The main message is to be responsible and constant in order to have good results and have the lesson plans ready a week before and provide the material so that the students have a routine to work with and have a better learning result, the teacher must also treat students with respect and patience so that you feel confident to ask for help when they need it.

  3. Mrs. Heart motivated Darin by making it cool to care. Mrs. Heart never lost sight of the big picture: preparing scholars for life. As new standards rolled out she implemented them within cool to care and prepping scholars for life. Her philosophy is sound. My philosophy is best described as a metaphor: in a forest there are many kinds of creatures. Some creatures come together and help each other out. While other creatures stand off. Each creature can feast on what they find, and be satisfied. The forest is the school and/or classroom. The creatures are the various scholars. Some work well together while others prefer to stay by themselves. No matter if they are working together, or helping, all of the scholars can have access to the information. Learning is the food; it is up to the scholars on how much satisfies them.

  4. As teachers, we aren't just preparing scholars for tests/exams. We are also working on helping them build the hard AND soft skills that will enable them to navigate challenges they face later on and simply to be more successful in day to day activities as well. Having a caring, motivated, and invested teacher is essential for students as it provides them with an example of an adult who uses their passion for success, and shows them that there are people out there who care and are willing to encourage the student. If people have high expectations of you it tends to push you to perform better, which is another reason that an engaged and interested teacher who doesn't just dismiss you as "a bad student" and leave it at that is an important part of development.

    1. I think some get so caught up with the right now part of teaching, that they forget it's not about what we teach and they remember today, but how does it shape students for the future.

  5. Being a teacher who is able to build positive relationships, and a safe classroom allows for the best opportunities for growth. Students will perform at expected levels, so keep them higher for them to improve themselves. Success is not just test scores, but the improvement of individuals over time, showing progress throughout school years.
